It’s the perfect mashup of Southern comfort and Italian flavors—something a little different, but guaranteed to hit the spot.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. mix of ground pork, veal, and beef (flexible)
  • ½ onion, grated
  • 2 stalks celery, grated
  • 1 large carrot, grated
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 (32 oz) cans crushed tomatoes
  • A few fresh basil leaves
  • ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 package spaghetti
  • U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish filets
  • Creole seasoning, to taste
  • Hot sauce, to taste
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup fish fry
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • Oil, for frying
  • Sandwich bread
  • Butter, for toasting bread

Directions

  1. Prepare Meat Sauce:
Brown the meat mixture over medium heat, then drain and set aside.
Sauté the grated onion, celery, and carrot until soft. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the browned meat back into the pan.
  2. Simmer the Sauce:
Add the crushed tomatoes to the pan. Season to taste and simmer over low heat for 1 hour. Stir in fresh basil and grated parmesan cheese. Reserve ¼ of the sauce in a bowl for later.
  3. Cook the Spaghetti:
Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions. Once done, mix it into the pan with the sauce and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Prep and Fry Catfish:
Slice the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish filets thinly. Season generously with Creole seasoning, hot sauce, and buttermilk. Set aside.
In a shallow dish, mix the fish fry, flour, and cornstarch. Dredge the seasoned fish in the dry mix.
Heat oil to 350°F and fry the fish until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
  5. Assemble the Sandwich:
Toast the sandwich bread with butter to your liking. Layer the bottom slice with a portion of spaghetti and meat sauce, followed by a piece of fried catfish. Top with the second slice of bread.
  6. Serve and Enjoy!
Dig into this delicious, unique combination of fried catfish and spaghetti in a sandwich!
